“Eric Andrews, you are under arrest for the murder of Natasha Fisher. You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney, one will be appointed to you by the state.” Connor breathed heavily as he placed the handcuffs behind Eric and read him his Miranda rights. Soon after, sirens could be heard wailing outside of the apartment. Paramedics and officers rushed to the scene and I could feel relief wash over me.

“You okay?” Connor found his way towards me after speaking to other officers on the scene. I watched Eric get hauled off in a police cruiser with his head hanging low.

“Yeah. What about your arm and leg?” I took a step back, looking at his bandages from the paramedics. “I’ve taken worse.”

He smiled and wrapped his unbound arm around me. “Everything’s gonna be okay now, Scarlett.” He whispers into my ear and I pressed my head against his chest.

For once in the past few weeks, I felt safe. I felt contented and happy to be by Connor’s side. Although I had only known him for a few days, I had a strangely good feeling about standing beside him.

“What is it?” he chuckles at me, realizing that I had been staring at his face for the past few seconds of him around my shoulder. “Nothing. Everything seems so…simple.” I smiled up at him and placed my head back into his chest and felt his warm body surround me with an affectionate heat.

“What happens now?” I asked him after he led me towards the car we used to get here. “Well…now’s usually the part where the hero grabs the girl by the waist, kisses her, and runs off into the sunset with her.” He smiled at me sweetly and we both leaned in close to each other. I put a hand on his cheek and he pressed his lips against mine, holding me by the waist and pulling me closer to him, feeling his embrace around me.

“I want to see you again.” He whispers as I pull away from the sweet and simple kiss.

“Oh, I’m sure you will.” I peck him on the cheek

“Need a ride home?” he asked kindly and swung his passenger door open. I hop into the car and we drove off into the night.
